On September 8, 1871, Ellen, an 11-year-old girl, went to bed as usual. However, the next time she woke up was not in the morning at all, but after 9 long years, when she was already 20 years old. Ellen Sadler fell asleep peacefully in her bedroom on the top floor of her parent’s cottage in a small village on the outskirts of Buckinghamshire.
In the morning, the girl did not go out for breakfast; neither her mother nor the specialist could wake her up. Rumors have spread about Sleeping Beauty in the village. They quickly spread across most of England. Dozens of people came to see Ellen every day. The girl still remained in bed, although many suspected deception.
Ellen was examined by reporters and doctors. The girl’s parents said they carefully poured liquid food for her: soups, water and milk, sometimes giving her oatmeal. The girl looked like a perfectly healthy child, she slept all the time. In May 1880, Ellen’s parents were forced to leave. After another 5 months, the girl suddenly opened her eyes.
The sisters who went up to her room found the girl in front of a mirror, staring in amazement at her reflection. Ellen’s surprise is understandable. After all, she went to bed as a little girl and woke up as an adult.
Unfortunately, Ellen couldn’t remember anything from the past nine years. Such a long sleep left no consequences. Ellen quickly recovered psychologically and lived a normal life.
