Experts identify two factors that aggravate dry skin in winter. The first is the weather: frost and wind, and the second is heating. Hot batteries make the air temperature comfortable for life, but the air itself becomes dry, which, of course, affects our skin. Any one cream will not be able to save us from all the problems, and for each case the protection of the skin will be different. Let’s figure out what means and in what situations it is worth using in the cold season.
1. In winter, before going outside, the skin needs to be protected, and indoors – moisturized.
Not all creams are suitable for weather protection, but only special creams-emollients, which include cocoa butter, shea butter, jojoba, squalene, beeswax, lanolin, fatty alcohols and silicones. They do not penetrate into the deep layers of the epidermis and serve solely to restore the protective barrier of the skin. Their task is to create a protective film that will not let the cold and wind damage our skin. You need to apply emollient creams about 30 minutes before going outside.2. Moreover, it is better to start moisturizing the skin in the evening.
There is an opinion that in the cold season it is better to give up moisturizers, but in fact this is a big misconception. Moisturizers are vital for maintaining skin health, but in winter they are used exclusively in rooms where, as a rule, the air is very dry. It is best to apply a moisturizer to the skin of the face in the evening, before going to bed. By the way, a regular humidifier can also be a good helper in the fight against dry skin.
3. If necessary, it is worth changing the skin care line.
Often, with a decrease in temperature values, our skin changes its type. For example, an oily skin type becomes a combined or, as it is also called, a mixed type. Combined skin becomes dry, and dry skin becomes even drier. In this case, you will have to completely change the entire line of skin care – from tonics to masks – to a greasier one. Take a closer look at more saturated creams – they give more protection and hydration. Cleansing products should be softer, and perhaps even without the use of water – for example, milk or micellar water. Scrubbing should be replaced with a more gentle, with less abrasive particles. In addition, it is necessary to increase the interval of application of the scrub: if in summer we use it once or twice a week, then in winter it will be enough once a week or even two weeks.
The scrub can be replaced with a light peeling with acids for home care, but do not forget that we do not stop using one or the other even in severe frosts.
4. Once a month it makes sense to visit a cosmetologist.
Now, in the cold season, the real salvation for the skin of the face will be biorevitalization – this is a procedure that saturates the skin with hyaluronic acid, and also prevents dry skin. Do not forget about regular cosmetic care, which must be carried out once every three to four weeks. It includes a light moisturizing peeling, nourishing masks, and, possibly, a massage that will help your skin improve blood circulation and nourish it. If you are concerned about very severe dry skin, then aggressive procedures such as CO2 laser for skin rejuvenation, trichloroacetic peels and median retinol peels are better to exclude or postpone until spring.
5. Include Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.
This is a very effective life hack that will help restore the lipid barrier and remove dry skin. The drug should be taken one gram twice a day, and it would be good to do this not only in winter, but also on a regular basis. Also, do not neglect products that contain Omega-3 fatty acids (walnuts, salmon, mackerel, white beans, etc.).
