Once a New Yorker found a whole bunch of branches on her bed where she was sleeping. And in these branches lay – unexpectedly – tiny, barely born 2 squirrels!
The woman was not at a loss and immediately began to call the service that takes care of little squirrels (yes, there is such a service in America). There she was answered by an activist named Kristina Reis. She has been helping orphaned animals to undergo rehabilitation for more than 10 years.
Her husband Michael helps her in this. Kristina got down to business and began to nurse the kids. Despite the girl’s efforts, alas, only one squirrel survived. Or rather, a squirrel, because the baby was female.
The girl was called Thumbelina – her height was too small. After growing up and leaving the beauty, Michael and Chris realized that they were too attached to Thumbelina. They simply could not let their little pet go free – they loved the baby so much!
Despite the great love for their pet, the activists still found the strength to take the squirrel to the park and try to release it: after all, it is a wild animal that should live in similar conditions. But then Thumbelina herself resisted: she curled up into a ball and did not want to run anywhere! After that, Kristina and Michael finally decided to keep her.
The Reis family loved the baby so much that sometimes, jokingly, they even call her their child. The squirrel sleeps with his owners and wears funny hats. And she, like any animal, is mischievous, capricious, behaves in an inappropriate way for a civilized squirrel: she gnaws at wires, furniture and climbs into the refrigerator without asking. Because of these «trips» for food, Thumbelina has already grown up and has become quite an ordinary well-fed squirrel. The owners even had to put her on a strict diet — it is extremely dangerous for proteins to get fat.
Yes, this squirrel was really lucky — she fell into loving hands and now her life is secured until the very end. It’s wonderful, it’s rare for someone of her kind to be so lucky. And Kristina and Michael show by their example that not only cats and dogs can be companions and friends!
Would you risk taking a squirrel home with you?
