Baby Melanie Martinez was born four years ago. “Wow, what a big-eyed one! When she grows up, she will become a model and will be a dream for photographers,” the adults say.
The parents did not immediately notice that the girl’s eyes were very large. More than usual. When they went to the ophthalmologist, they found out that Melanie has a rare genetic disease — Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome.
Because of it, the girl’s eyes seem so unearthly. The sun is not equally friendly to everyone. Therefore, Melanie with her big eyes does not leave the house without sunglasses.
Pupils like Martinez’s seem beautiful. But it’s also a big funnel for ultraviolet. Protective lenses or special glasses may well correct the situation.
The girl’s parents have two younger children. But only Melanie has Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome. Karina, the baby’s mother, worries that other children will react negatively to her daughter’s appearance. And she will become an object of ridicule.
Friends of the Martinez family believe that with such big eyes, Melanie will certainly be able to make a good modeling career.
