At what point does a pet become part of the family — when is it decided by us or by itself? The cat named Polunoshka never claimed official status, but simply fulfilled her duty, as everyone in the family should. And it saved at least two lives, a child and a mother.
Midnight appeared in the family of Bernita and Roy Rogers not by chance. The couple has already tried to have children three times and all three times led to miscarriages. Self-esteem and outlook on life fell to nowhere, the meaning of existence was only to try again. But what if it fails again? Fearfully… And then a black, blacker than the night itself, affectionate cat came to them right from the street. Which seemed to be the antipode of their fears — well, here I am, black Midnight, but I’m carrying a positive. And soon after, the couple finally had a daughter, who was named Stacy.
Little Stacey was almost blown away, they never took their eyes off her, and for greater safety, an advanced version of an electronic nanny was installed in the nursery — a tracking device that reacts to movement and sound, as well as records video. Polunoshka treated Stacy indifferently and did not demand that she, too, be given attention. One evening, the Rogers’ parents came to visit and Bernita was all over her ears in worries, so she looked into the children’s bedroom less and less often. The nanny was silent, so everything is fine — Polunoshka, why are you twisting under your feet?!!
No one paid attention as the cat disappeared from view, and then the most eerie sounds that one can imagine were heard. Polunoshka growled, screamed and howled directly into the microphone of the electronic device, desperate to attract people’s attention in the usual ways. And when the parents rushed to the children’s bedroom in horror, little Stacy had already turned blue. The baby could not make a sound or move, and only the unknown instinct of the cat Polunoshka reacted to the danger.
Doctors saved the girl at the very last moment, she had respiratory failure, which was missed during the examination earlier. And all this time Bernita was not herself, she suddenly realized that she had almost lost not just a child, her last support in life. And it’s also so stupid when, after so many years of effort and worries, I allowed myself to get distracted, relax. She just wouldn’t have survived it. And if Polunoshka wasn’t around? But the cat turned out to be the guardian angel that the higher powers sent to this family at the right time.
Many years have passed since then, Stacy has grown up and become a girl, and Polunoshka has lived her cat’s age and gone to another, better world. This story has become a Rogers family gift, a new legend who was even awarded a plot for one of the editions of the Oprah Winfrey show.
